Whale Watching FAQs

When is the best time to go Whale Watching?

Each year from late July to early November whale watch fever hits Hervey Bay!

Whales are sighted daily from August to November and operators will guarantee sigthings during this period.  Outside this period, some operators also run dolphin watching tours on a regular basis.

What type of Whales and Whale activity will we see?

The Bay's calm waters provide shelter for humpback whales and their calves as they pass through Hervey Bay on their migration to Antarctia, after giving birth in the waters of northern Queensland.

Each year, whale watchers are regularly treated to magnificent displays of tail and pectoral slapping as well as breaching.  Other marine life such as dolphins, turtles and dugongs are also sighted regularly.

Minke and Southern Wright whales have also been sighted during the season.

What sort of tours are available?

Over a dozen operators offer whale watching tours with vessels departing the Hervey Bay Boat Harbour daily.  The fleet offers half-day, three-quarter-day, full day and dawn tours on a variety of vessels, each hosted by professional and experienced crewmembers, who provide a knowledgeable and interesting commentary.
