Wongi State ForestA string of beautiful waterholes fringed by paperbarks and rushes and surrounded by eucalypt forest and exotic pine plantations make Wongi State Forest and Forest Reserve special places to visit. Lenthalls Dam, the water supply for Hervey Bay shire, is in the heart of the forest.
Hoop pine rainforest, open eucalypt forest, open woodland with a heath understorey, and exotic pine plantations grow in Wongi. The National Bicentennial Trail passes through the forest. Exploring Wongi Camp or picnic under the shady eucalypt trees. Cool off in a waterhole in summer. For your safety, never jump or dive into the waterholes. Supervise children closely as the water is deep. Two picnic areas are provided beside the waterholes. The first picnic area is near the forest entrance and the second is 700m from the entrance next to the camping area. Both have picnic tables. Wongi camping area has sites to suit families, groups, caravans, tents and motorhomes. Picnic tables, toilets, cold showers and tank water are provided. Take a fuel stove. Boil the water for five minutes before drinking. Dogs are allowed on leashes. Getting there Wongi is 25km north-west of Maryborough. Head 12.5km towards Childers on the Bruce Highway then turn left at the signpost and drive 10km into the picnic and camping areas along a gravel road.
