Urangan Pier

Fishing on Urangan Pier One of the most popular land-based fishing locations in Hervey Bay, the Urangan Pier has been fully restored.  Land-based anglers can now fish waters that were once the sole domain of boat owners.  This means that mackerel, tuna and the occasional cobia can be taken from the deepwater gutters at the end of the pier.  To transport their fishing tackle along the pier's one kilometre length, anglers have bikes with custom-made rod holders, and they have also set up trolleys for the transportation of bait, eskies, buckets and other gear.

Whiting are a common catch close to the beach during summer, with yabbies and worms the best baits.  Although you'll still find plenty of fish by casting well out from the pier, the locals have made a fine art of dropping their baited hooks over the side and allowing the bait to sweep beneath the pier.  Garfish, bream, and flathead are also caught here.  In both the inner and the outer gutter at the end of the pier, live garfish and herring will account for pelagic fish such as trevally, queenfish, and various kinds of mackerel.  These fish are caught in good numbers during summer but can still be taken well into winter.
