Great Sandy StraitThe Great Sandy Strait runs south from Hervey Bay along the western side of Fraser Island to Inskip Point and Tin Can Inlet. The Mary and Susan rivers enter the strait at River Heads. Mangrove-lined shores, sandy tidal flats, protected beaches and a maze of tidal creeks and islands are characteristic of the area. Vehicle travel along this part of the western shore is not possible, though some tracks lead in and give limited access. A boat is needed to fish the area properly. Summer whiting can be caught throughout the length of the strait on the many yabbie banks. Winter (diver) whiting are prolific from March/April through to October. Blue swimmer and sand crabs are popular species through the area. Mangrove jack, estuary cod, bream, flathead, threadfin salmon and mud crabs are also popular catches. Most creeks and the shore fish well for flathead, with the jacks, cod, salmon and bream found in the creeks. Estuary cod are usually caught in smaller numbers around jetties, rocky outcrops and mussel beds, and bream will share the same feeding areas. McKenzies Jetty, south of Kingfisher Bay, attracts flathead, whiting, bream and trevally. |
