Breaksea SpitBreaksea Spit is an enormous sandspit extending 30 kilometres north of Sandy Cape at the northern tip of Fraser Island. This area has long been the destination of choice for diehard reef-fishing fanatics, who travel for hours to catch some of the most delicious and hard-pulling bottom-fish - snapper, red emperor and pearl perch to mention a few. Spinning, jiggling and trolling lures over and around these reefs can produce phenomenal fishing. A full tackle box is recommended as cobia, Spanish mackerel, trevally, yellowfin tuna and billfish are tough on lures. Anchoring and using berley over the reefs is a sure fire way of attracting fish to easy casting distance from the boat. Marlin captures are now being made more regularly in these waters. Most of the boats in Hervey Bay concentrate on reef fishing, but there are a small number that specialise in billfishing. In a short period of time, the game fishing grounds have been the scenes of some remarkable captures. |
