Childers

... a national trust town

Situated at the juncture of the Bruce and Isis Highways, Childers is apporimately 320 kilometres north-west from Brisbane.

One of the most picturesque towns on the Bruce Highway, the main street of Childers is lined with leopard trees and a number of beautifully preserved historic buildings. An 'historic walk' guide is available at the Visitor Information Cente. In 1902 a fire destroyed most of the western side of the main street, and ironically a more recent fire, in June 2002, has given Childers international notoriety.

Sugar production is the shire's main industry. This is the largest tomato growing are in the southern hemisphere. Other crops include: avocado, zucchini, lychee, mango and macadamia nuts. The district's exports include engineering machinery and processed produce such as guacamole.
