Burnett ShireA string of pearls beside a jewel-blue sea…Burnett Shire surrounds Bundaberg and covers an area of 2,000 square kilometres, from Baffle Creek in the north to Theodolite Creek in the south. It extends to within 10 kilometres of Gin Gin to the west and 20 kilometres from Childers in the southwest. Extending along the Pacific Ocean coastline, the Burnett Shire includes the coastal centres of Bargara, Innes Park, Elliott Heads, Burnett Heads and Moore Park - some 92 kilometres of coastline. The Shire boasts an estimated population of 23,000 peple. Burnett Shire is dotted with a number of rural villages like the small fishing community of Miara located on the mouth of the Kolan River and the larger villages of Sharon, South Kolan and Yandaran. The Burnett River runs right through the heart of the Shire and is the main water source for irrigation and residential supplies. Burnett Heads is positioned where the Burnett River meets the sea. The marina caters for local and international vessels. Barolin Rocks offers ideal inshore diving opportunities and has been used as a dive site for students obtaining their SCUBA license. Turtles are an annual visitor to the shores of the Burnett Shire. Female turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on almost all of the beaches of the Burnett Shire, but are most common on Mon Repos beach.
