Cruising and Boating

The Great Sandy Strait is a wide shallow waterway separating Fraser Island from the mainland.  Protected from the waves and swells of the Pacific Ocean, it is a fishing and boating paradise.

Rental yachts and houseboats are available from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach. They can be skippered or, after a thorough lesson, you can sail yourself through these easy-to-navigate waters, exploring the coves, creek mouths and shipwrecks that are dotted along the western side of Fraser Island.

Try some mud-crabbing, or throw a line over the side to catch your seafood dinner to cook on the barbecue. Or just keep an eye out for the dolphins, dugongs and turtles that play in the calm waters.
